Datoria națională a SUA depășește 40 de trilioane de dolari, alarmând economiștii
US national debt has exceeded $40 trillion, doubling in the past decade, according to Treasury figures. This milestone highlights the impact of heavy spending and rising interest payments under both the Trump and Biden administrations.
As of August 18, the national debt reached $40.05 trillion, reflecting an increase from just under $20 trillion in 2016. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) had initially projected that overall borrowing would only reach $39.6 trillion by the end of fiscal year 2026, indicating a faster-than-expected rise in government borrowing needs.
The CBO has also warned that the US is approaching its debt ceiling of $41.1 trillion, with projections suggesting that the debt could climb to approximately $64 trillion by 2036. This escalation has raised concerns about the implications for future interest costs and overall economic stability.
The interest rate on 30-year bonds, a key indicator of borrowing costs, recently hit 5.34%, the highest level in nearly 20 years. These rates influence borrowing for consumers and businesses, affecting mortgages, car loans, and credit cards. The surge in bond yields has been attributed to rising oil prices and inflation concerns, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, including the US-Iran conflict.
